Well said, Jack. I share your feelings of utter despair. Not sure anti-anxiety meds would help me at this point. Please keep doing what you are doing. We need your voice of reason for the next 4 years of VERY dark days.
Hi from Oregon. I loved your work for the Oregonian, back in the day, and I have wondered what happened to you for the past year or so. I am thrilled to find you on Substack and I had to subscribe. Your work is amazing. About the election, I feel exactly like you do. I am ready to resist.
Jack, this column said what I have been feeling and thinking for a very long time. All of it, including the lorazepam (10 pills dispensed by my doc every few months, which I usually bite in half as the mood dictates). Please keep on doing what you do so well, because we need your pen and voice to articulate what we are feeling. You are so good, I've been singing your praises ever since I first subscribed to You Betcha!
Amazed that you chose to include Reagan rather than LBJ or Carter. Reagan lied as often as Trump. He just did it with a twinkle in his eye. In my life time of voting ( Nixon - Trump) I have seen the steady progression of Republican presidents who were against abortion rights and denigrated the poor (women). We have definitively chosen our way forward as a nation. I am disheartened. Thankfully I live in a Blue City in a Blue State, but it is only a matter of time before we are ruled by the darkness.
Thank you so much I needed to hear that. Well said. I’m just so tired of all of it. Where has kindness and normalcy gone? I know I am not alone but it was such a lonely day. Resist! Today I mourn. Tomorrow I fight on.
Thank you, Jack, for articulating and encapsulating the feelings so many of us share. We got knocked down, but we need to get up again and engage with those who disagree with us. We need to understand why a convicted felon and rapist was so attractive to women voters.
Your rumination on post-election bewilderment hits home. Keep doing what you do best…writing, with occasional cartoons. I hope your kids will “pump you up.”
Completely understand the Placer County peril, and it's for real. Only in the last year have I sussed out the Facebook accounts of some cretin before I unleash a cryptic broadside in their direction. Most of the time I desist because my life is worth more than a couple likes.
Thanks Jack!! Just hearing you are still here and feeling what we are all feeling-at least those of us that gave up the tree-swinging thing!! For what it is worth, I believe God allowed this to happen to keep arms flowing to Israel and keep them protected from the Iranians, who most of the Middle East hate, if not secretly! I think they will end up heros here, and much like the lies getting spread by Trump about, well....everything, Israel has always tried their best to avoid collateral damage!! What army hides behind their citizens? Well, keep the faith and your excellent work flowing!! thanks again:) Oh, if Trump forgets Israel, he was about due at 80 for a bad sickness anyway! Maybe poisoned at McDonald's for added measure-now that's Justice, with a capital J!!
You got me perfectly. I’m at my nadir. I know from past experiences that I am resilient. So I will come back. Might take awhile to shake this bottom though.
After Reagan I thought nothing could be worse. An actor? Really? Bush - Gore hurt in a different way. Saw the beginnings of the mob rules approach to challenging elections and how the courts are not going to help. Trump's 2016 victory was horrifying but really went no where with all those huge clown shoes dragging on the ground behind them. Now I have to live long enough to see this train wreck swept up and hauled off to the dump. Your work helps.
I completely agree. My glass half-full approach to life just got spilled all over the table. I imagine the worst now, with the terrible feeling that my imagination cannot even summon up the vision of how bad this could get.

Effing Hell. What American exceptionalism?
Exceptionalism can be either good or bad, can't it? How about exceptionally ignorant? Exceptionally evil?

Probably the Lorezepam talking. I’ll make some additions. I would say Reagan was Churchill compared to this maniac.

Hang in there. You truly “make a difference.”
The Ceaucescus came to a rather bloody end, quite the Christmas present to the Romanian people.
