What happened to real men in America? I learned something early in life, “if you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything”. Half of Americans fell for a con man rapist bullying childlike nutcase. I will never understand how the dumbing down of America fell for his garbage and bluster.
This is a sad time for journalism everywhere, but in some ways particularly for small town (like Latrobe) newspapers. Where are we to turn for local news? The internet, that bastion of truth and decency? Nope, of course not. If half what’s posted there is true that’s a good day. The rising Substack contributions are looking helpful, but not so much for local consumption. Our local NPR station is doing its best, but they’re lacking the staff to do much more than major stories. Yep. Sad time.
And you're so right. Cowards shouldn't run newspapers. There are plenty of professions where cowards do not belong and the Fourth Estate is preeminent.
I have a masthead from the Durango Herald hanging on my wall. On the far left is a William Allen White quote (from 1917?) "There are three things that no one can do to the entire satisfaction of anyone else: make love, poke a fire, and run a newspaper."
As a former local newspaper editor in Whitefish Montana, I agree with White.
HOWEVER, I EVEN MORE FULLY AGREE WITH YOUR SENTIMENTS. I made it a policy to print letters to the editor that did not agree with our editorials or stories. FerKripesSake it's the point of an editorial cartoon to be opinionated. It is that to which the White quote really refers.
He looks like what my late, great best friend called “sanctimonious.” We used to have a competition to use that word as often as possible. Why do so many men think they’re so adorable?
I was a former women's editor at the Albany Democrat-Herald, and knew Bob Caldwell. Agree with everything you said about him, and also deplore this Dave Cuddihy and his actions. I haven't kept up with the staff roster at the D-H, and don't know when he would have been there. There weren't any craven characters on staff in my day and they definitely wouldn't have been tolerated in the newsroom.

Thank you for standing up to the BS.

Wondering what effect this had.

I'm sure it had a great effect.

You got this dead-on, sir.
YES! Thank you once again, Jack!
