Love reading all the fascinating journalistic history. Dad was a news photographer for the Boregonian pre-strike, then KATU until his untimely passing (nobody ever says “died” anymore) in his early fifties. So many of these names and stories are familiar from way back. Your writing, as well as the brilliant cartoons, continue to inspire and entertain, much needed in these blackest of days.
I would suspect most Pulitzer-worthy writers are a bit complicated, as are most artists who rise to that level in their medium. For some, the complications can become a muse.
What a wonderful tribute to a friend/enemy/pal/contemporary. I'm just sorry it was in memorial, because I think Steve might have enjoyed your vivid timeline of your intertwined lives.
Thank you, Jack. Each of us must have a memory of him. Steve knew I would need a hat to raft down the America River & lent me one. Mighty thoughtful. Former Mormons--one of the great (and most thoughtful) subsets of AAEC.
I just love your storytelling and writing, Jack! This is a wonderful tribute to a man you obviously admired and cared about! Thank you for this! I’m sorry you lost a friend!!
Gald that, despite all the complications, your affection for him remains.
Thanks for giving us this glimpse into his life and into your connection to it.
Sorry for your loss.
What a fantastic tribute! I enjoyed reading this. I am sorry for the loss of your friend.

Jack, that’s lovely. I’d like to add that I gave Steve his first beer in a hotel room in….New orleans? (He declined a toke;)
He was a really interesting and genuinely good person and we all liked him a lot ❤️☮️
Ah, fun to read that Joel.
No need to be sad. Steve's one of the lucky ones. He's gone home.
This piece is very moving. It is about passion, romance, and the burden of great talent. RIP is sometimes Reverberate In Passion
Political cartoonists have lives, are out there every day, and are surely an endangered species.
And, that’s a shame - the endangered part. I do my best to read and follow so many of you.

Wrenching, insightful commentary on the fallout from the death of someone we've known, deeply associated with...
How interesting that in the relatively small world of editorial cartoonists there should be so much drama.

Thanks for writing this tribute about him. I learned a lot. Glad you could still find a fondness for him.

I’m very sad.
He fundamentally became a very bighearted guy.
