Not endorsing VP Harris was my line in the sand. I paused prime and do my shopping elsewhere. It’s inconvenient and more costly but it’s worth it to me. Each time I pay more for an item, or have to wait longer for delivery, or put up with commercials on free TV, I think of journalistic freedom.

Herblock was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom when it still meant something before Trump diminished the value by giving them out as party (GOP) favors to unworthies like Jim Jordan and Rush Limbaugh.

Today is coincidentally the tenth anniversary of the massacre of twelve at the satirical publication, Charlie Hebdo, in Paris. A few years back I met a survivor, Phillippe Lancon a, who was gravely wounded, his face shot away and who wrote a compelling award winning book about his grueling recovery. Charlie Hebdo still publishes but in an undisclosed location.

This was the one that turned me from a free subscriber to a happily paying customer.

I’ve always been a cartoonist fan, both liberal and conservative, because of what you can do in one panel vs what the gasbags try to do in 1,000 words!

Thanks, Jack. I learned a lot from this about Herblock, who was one of the heroes of my formative years. His cartoons appeared regularly in our daily paper, the Raleigh News and Observer (known with affection as the Nuisance and Disturber). I would turn first to the editorial page for the Herblock, and he never disappointed. He deserved his Medal of Freedom, unlike those pedants who were given it by the moron. His home paper the WaPo was once a great paper. But no more; the political damage to its reputation meted out by Bezos was unthinkable. And now the treatment of Ann Telnaes, another favorite, was too much. Along with thousands of others I canceled my subscription. I hope it will not “go gentle into that good night”, but I expect it will do just that.

"He didn’t go around shooting off his mouth, he just did his work, which is kind of the point".

I prefer artists who shoot off their respective tools of the trade be they a quill, a mouse, and/or a keyboard, to expose the bullshit from the politicians shooting off their mouths. Best described as 'bullshooters'. Shades of Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 on the horizon.

Absolutely love this post, Jack. Mr. Block was superb and, oh, so human. His eyes really sparkled when he looked at Ann. I saw this at a Library of Congress event. Last October, Ann and Mike Ramirez (and other good folk) spoke at Syracuse U's Institute of Democracy, Journalism and Citizenship. No eyes were twinkling. Jack,

The WaPo's AI-Comments Summary would rightly conclude that Bezos is a spineless piece of shit. Just another great column (and have you ever considered a Leon Russell Halloween costume? 😉)
