How fortunate you are with a depth of enviable memories. At 82 closing in on 83 my memories of mother, who passed at 34, are few. In turn I now tell stories of my youth hoping that my children will speak nostalgically of me.

Lovely. These waiting surprises, springing from dark corners. After my mom died and years after I inherited her house, I found such a thing, deep in the basement. It was a closed envelope with the honest to God instruction, “Do not open until after my death.” 1966, written just days after I married, much too young.

My father's parents, both of whom grew up in Swedish emigre communities in Pennsylvania, kept the Swedish language for themselves (their first language..) so that my dad and Uncle Bill could not understand what they were saying.
