Ha! Me too! Actually, I lived 150 miles away in Pennsylvania but loved going to NYC to visit relatives. (I figured I'd live there one day but ended up in San Francisco instead. No regrets there!) MAD was my Bible, so to speak, in those days. I'd wait breathlessly for the new issues to come out. My great-aunt worked for New American Library at the time and frequently gave me MAD paperbacks. She complained about William Gaines--said she didn't like him very much because he apparently had bad manners. As for halvah--well, my dad loved it and ate it all the time. I frankly thought it tasted a bit like sand. Oh well.
